With precision tiny grains of colored sand flow through the metal funnel called ‘chak-pur’ and on to the artists canvas. The sand builds and intricate geometric patterns and creative designs emerge.
The artist Lama Khedup Bhutia is creating a Sand Mandala as part of this years Festival of Tibet.
As with all true artists they make it look so easy. A bit of colored sand and a straw, nothing too sophisticated …… simple. Oh! I left out the sharp eye, the steady hand, a massive dose of concentration and no small attention to detail, and I’ve probably left out a hundred and one other skills the uninitiated never see, but you get the idea.
All the time I watched people were coming and going, there were no barriers, a music class was on in the same room but not once did the artist miss a beat …. no rubbing out and starting over again.
All this effort in the knowledge that on Sunday it will be destroyed.
