Oh, how the character and style of buildings have changed!
This facade is all that remains of a commercial warehouse built between 1888-1889. Together with the Customs House (which is directly opposite) they are evidence of the official entrance to the former Port of Brisbane.
The ornate facade gives us a glimpse of the craftsmanship of the times and offers us a reference point for comparison with more recent structures.
I’m no expert but it seems to me that the sculptured effect and coloured glass used on the building to the left works with the facade simply because its a break from the uninspiring steel and glass offered up by the rest of the neighbours.
